KINGVALE, Placer County — A large Caltrans pavement rehabilitation project is reshaping sections of Interstate 80 near Kingvale and Soda Springs, with construction officially scheduled through July 2027.

The project includes pavement rehabilitation, drainage system repairs, replacement of the Kingvale and Troy Road undercrossings, new highway signage, upgraded lighting and a truck climbing lane for eastbound traffic. The transportation agency says pavement damage from heavy vehicle traffic, studded tires and snow chains contributed to the need for substantial repairs.

Caltrans lists a total estimated project cost of $90.71 million, combining capital and support costs. The proposed truck climbing lane is intended to separate some slower heavy vehicles from faster traffic, but it does not remove the need for extra caution on steep grades.

What residents and travelers should know

Residents and travelers should follow current work-zone lane restrictions rather than assume the entire route closes for the full construction period. In winter, maintenance and weather can produce additional restrictions unrelated to the capital project.
