KINGVALE, Placer County — The first day of November has brought winter driving restrictions to Interstate 80 at Kingvale. California’s highway information service reported early Sunday, November 1, 2026, that chains were required for eastbound vehicles traveling from Kingvale toward Truckee, with a limited exception for four-wheel-drive vehicles equipped with snow tires on all four wheels.

For westbound traffic, Caltrans reported restrictions beginning at Truckee and extending west into the Sierra corridor. The precise western endpoint can change, as do storm-related controls, and official updates may supersede the overnight report.

Caltrans also posted a mandatory westbound truck brake check near Nyack to help prevent brake fires. Drivers hauling trailers, commercial vehicles and travelers without winter equipment should not assume the passenger-car exception applies to them.

What residents and travelers should know

The quoted restrictions are a time-specific snapshot, not a live guarantee. Before departure, check Caltrans QuickMap and call 800-427-7623 for current conditions. Do not stop in a traffic lane to fit chains, and consider delaying nonessential trips if road surfaces are deteriorating.
