KINGVALE, Placer County — California permits studded snow tires between November 1 and April 30, according to Caltrans guidance, a seasonal change of particular interest to Kingvale-area drivers facing icy Sierra roads.

Studded tires are not a substitute for tire chains when posted chain controls require them. Caltrans explains that four-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive vehicles with the appropriate snow tires may be exempt from installing chains under certain restriction levels, but drivers in controlled areas must still carry a suitable set of chains.

Traction-device rules differ for heavy vehicles and for vehicles towing trailers. Even a driver with high-quality winter tires should check the vehicle manufacturer’s instructions and carry approved equipment when mountain weather can change quickly.

What residents and travelers should know

The calendar window for studded tires does not guarantee snow is present or that the freeway is safe. Drivers should review the posted restriction signs, current Caltrans road reports and weather conditions before leaving Kingvale or heading over Donner Pass.
